Ice Bucket Challenge - 2014

Good afternoon, and welcome back to Viral Trends Over Time! Last week we discussed the Harlem Shake.. now it is time to talk about the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge"!

If you're unaware of the Ice Bucket Challenge, let me jog your memory. First let me start by explaining what "ALS" stands for; ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Others may know it by its more common name, Lou Gehrig's disease. This is a disease that effects the nervous system, and weakens muscles that impact your overall physical function.

To easily sum up the challenge, it consists of a participant standing in front of a camera holding a large bucket of ice. They list off different names of people they want to nominate to do the challenge next as they pour the bucket of ice over there head. The people nominated then have 24 hours to respond with their own video.

Here is Bill Gates Ice Bucket Challenge video with over 35 million views on YouTube!

This viral challenge was co-founded by Pat Quinn and Pete Frates, who are ALS activists. The challenge went viral in August of 2014, and helped raise over $220 million for medical research towards ALS patients! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Bucket_Challenge)
