Hey guys, and welcome back to my blog that covers viral trends that happened over time! Last week we discussed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and now it's time to talk about the 'blue/white dress challenge'!
Now this was not necessarily a challenge per se, but it was more-of an optical illusion phenomenon. The picture was taken by Cecilia Bleasdale weeks before her daughters wedding. Cecilia was shopping close to Chester, England at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet when she took the picture of the dress. She sent the picture to her daughter, and sure enough they had a disagreement about the color of the dress. Cecilia decided to let the internet settle this disagreement when she posted the picture on Facebook. Within one week of the picture being posted it was tweeted 10 million times with people using the hashtags, #thedress, #whiteandgold, and #blackandblue. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress)
This video made by AsapSCIENCE has over 28 million views, and does a fantastic job explaining the science and justification of why some people see the color differently. It all has to do with color perception and how the lighting in the picture affects the color scheme of the dress.
The illumination this dress created had the entire world scratching its head in confusion.

I am sorry to break it to you if you happen to see the dress as white and gold, because it has been confirmed by the actual maker of the dress (Roman Originals) that it is in fact black and blue.
This video was uploaded in 2015 by a popular YouTube channel called REACT. They take a group of teenagers and have them react and discuss to the color of the dress. It is super entertaining to see all of their different reactions to the dress!
